The Ministry of
Railways has decided to install Anti Collision Device (ACD)
system on selected sections of Indian Railways, to begin with.
In this connection,
works for route survey and installation of ACD have been sanctioned
on 1800 route kilometres of Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway,
which are in progress. Besides, works of ACD route survey on
849 route kilometres of non-electrified route of Vasco-da-Gama-Madgaon-Londa-Hubli-Guntakal-Renigunta
section of South Central (SC) Railway and 792 route kilometres
of electrified route of Ernakulam-Shornur-Palghat-Erode-Chennai
and Bangalore-Jolarpettai-Chennai sections of Southern Railway
have been approved.
The ACD system,
developed by the Konkan Railway, after initial trials and extended
field trials on Jalandhar-Amritsar section of Northern Railway
from August 15, 2002 to January 19, 2003, has been found technically
suitable.
The installation
of ACD system on railways is intended to improve safety of trains
by preventing their head-on-collision.
