ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBER FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS ON BASE 1982=100 FOR THE MONTH OF MAY INCREASES BY ONE POINT


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of May, 2003 has increased by 1 point to stand at 494 (four hundred & ninety four). The increase in index is mainly due to rise in the prices of Rice, Mustard Oil, Onion, Vegetables & Fruits, etc.

All India Consumer Price Index Number for May, 2002 had increased by 3 points.

The Rise/Fall in index varies from centre to centre. In 41 centres increase in index was noticed between 1 to 14 points, in 9 centres it remained constant and in 20 centres it recorded a decrese of 1 to 8 points when compared to previous month.

During the month Tiruchirapally centre experienced the maximum increase of 14 points on account of increase in prices of Rice, Onion, Vegetables & Fruits, Coffee powder, Tailoring charges etc. Whereas, Thiruvananthapuram Centre experienced the maximum decrease of 8 points. The decrease in index was due to decrease in prices of Rice, Wheat, Vegetables & Fruits, etc. However, the index remained stationary in 9 centres viz. Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Haldia, Faridabad, Labac-Silchar, Mariani-Jorhat, Solapur and Varanasi centres.

The index in respect of six main centres during May, 2003 stood at the following level:-

  1. Ahmedabad 491 4. Chennai 536
  2. Bangalore 475 5. Delhi 568
  3. Kolkata 542 6. Mumbai 586

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has decreased from 5.12 per cent in April-2003 to 4.66 per cent in May, 2003. In May, 2002 it was also 4.66 per cent.
