REVISED
ESTIMATES OF ANNUAL NATIONAL INCOME, 2002-03 AND
QUARTERLY ESTIMATES OF GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT, 2002-03
The
Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics
and Programme Implementation, has released the revised estimates
of national income for the financial year 2002-03 at constant
(1993-94) and current prices. Further, the CSO has also released
the quarterly estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the
fourth quarter [Jan-Mar (Q4)] of 2002-03, both at constant (1993-94)
and current prices.
I REVISED
ANNUAL ESTIMATES FOR THE YEAR 2002-03
The advance estimates
of national income for the year 2002-03 were released on 7th
February 2003. These estimates have now been revised incorporating
latest estimates of agricultural production, index of industrial
production and performance of key sectors like, railways, transport
other than railways, communication, banking and insurance and
government expenditure.
The salient features
of these estimates are detailed below:
(a)
Estimates at constant (1993-94) prices
Gross
Domestic Product
GDP at factor
cost at constant (1993-94) prices in the year 2002-03 is now estimated
at Rs.13,20,313 crore (as against Rs.13,20,733 crore estimated
earlier), showing a growth rate of 4.3 per cent over the Quick
Estimates of GDP for the year 2001-02 of Rs. 12,65,429 crore,
released on 31st January 2003.
The sectors which
showed growth rates of 5 per cent or more, are "mining &
quarrying" (5.0 per cent as compared to 4.8 per cent earlier),
"manufacturing" (6.1 per cent, which is the same as
estimated earlier), "trade, hotels, transport and communication"
(7.8 per cent which is the same as estimated earlier), "financing,
insurance, real estate & business services" (6.1 per
cent as compared to 6.5 per cent estimated earlier) and "community,
social & personal services" (6.8 per cent as compared
to 6.4 per cent earlier) and "construction (7.2 per cent
as compared to 7.1 per cent earlier). The sectors "electricity,
gas & water supply" (3.9 per cent as compared to 5.2
per cent earlier), "agriculture, forestry & fishing"(-3.2
per cent as compared to –3.1 per cent earlier) however, recorded
low growth rates during the year.
National
Income
The net national
product (NNP) at factor cost, also known as national income, at
1993-94 prices is now estimated at Rs. 11,61,580 crore (as compared
to Rs. 11,61,966 crore estimated earlier), during 2002-03, as
against the previous year’s Quick Estimate of Rs. 11,15,157 crore.
In terms of growth rates, the national income is estimated to
rise by 4.2 per cent during 2002-03 in comparison to the growth
rate of 6.2 per cent in 2001-02.
Per
Capita Income
The per capita income
in real terms (at 1993-94 prices) during 2002-03 is estimated
to attain a level of Rs. 11010 (as against Rs. 11014 estimated
earlier), as compared to the Quick Estimates for the year 2001-02
of Rs. 10754.The growth rate in per capita income is estimated
at 2.4 per cent during 2002-03, as against the previous year’s
estimate of 4.3 per cent.

Estimates at current prices
Gross
Domestic Product
GDP at factor cost
at current prices in the year 2002-03 is estimated at Rs. 22,42,463
crore, showing a growth rate of 7.1 per cent over the Quick Estimates
of GDP for the year 2001-02 of Rs. 20,94,013 crore, released on
31st January 2003.
National
Income
The NNP at
factor cost at current prices is now estimated at Rs. 19,86,027
crore during 2002-03, as compared to Rs. 18,64,292 crore during
2001-02 showing a rise of 6.5 per cent.
Per
Capita Income
The per capita income
at current prices during 2002-03 is estimated to attain a level
of Rs.18,825 as compared to the Quick Estimates for the year 2001-02
of Rs.17,978, showing a rise of 4.7 per cent.
Estimates of
gross/net national product, gross/net domestic product and per
capita income, alongwith GDP at factor cost by kind of economic
activity, for the years 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03, at constant
(1993-94) and current prices are given in Statements 1 to 4.
II QUARTERLY
ESTIMATES OF GDP FOR THE QUARTER JAN-MAR 2003
(a)
Estimates at constant (1993-94) prices
The four quarters
of a financial year are denoted by Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4. GDP at factor
cost at constant (1993-94) prices in Q4 of 2002-03 is estimated
at Rs. 3,59,314 crore, as against Rs. 3,42,678 crore in Q4 of
2001-02, showing a growth rate of 4.9 per cent. The sectors which
registered significant growth rates in Q4 of 2002-03 over Q4 of
2001-02 are "manufacturing" at 7.1 per cent, "construction"
at 7.5 per cent, "trade, hotels, transport, and communication"
at 8.8 per cent, and "community, social and personal services"
at 7.7 per cent. The "mining & quarrying", "electricity,
gas and water supply" "financing, insurance, real estate
and business services" and "agriculture, forestry &
fishing" sectors showed growth rates of less than 5 per cent.
(b)
Estimates at current prices
GDP at factor cost
at current prices in Q4 of 2002-03 is estimated at Rs. 6,14,557
crore, as against Rs. 5,65,781 crore in Q4 of 2001-02, showing
a rise of 8.6 per cent.
Estimates of
GDP at factor cost by kind of economic activity for the four quarters
of 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03 at constant (1993-94) and current
prices, alongwith the growth rates, are given in Statements 5
and 6, respectively.
