RAILWAYS TO INTRODUCE RUNNING TRAIN VACANT BERTH INFORMATION SYSTEM

The Ministry of Railways has directed all the 16 Zonal Railways to introduce running train vacant berth information system and improve customer satisfaction and revenue of railways. This new system has been evolved and implemented very successfully by Kota Division of Western Railway.

In most of the cases, updated vacant berth position is available to the commercial control, announcing booth and current reservation booth staff about 40 to 60 minutes before arrival of trains. Allotment of vacant berth is done at the booth on priority----first to waitlisted passengers and then to other passengers on first come first served basis at the counter.

Under the system, Kota Division has offered 30,353 vacant berths to passengers earning Rs. 655,513 within 15 days of its launching.

Besides improving the financial position, the new current reservation system is intended to increase user satisfaction through transparency in allotment of vacant berths and prevent leakage of revenue.
