RAIL COACH FACTORY MAKES FIRST EVER REFRIGERATED VAN


The Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, a production unit under the Ministry of Railways, has manufactured the first refrigerated van of railways. Refrigerated van has the capacity to carry 12 tonnes of fruits, vegetables and other perishable commodities at 4 degree celcius and 5 ton of other materials at 20 degree Celsius. Such vans can travel for fifteen days without refuelling and the maximum fuel consumption will be five litres per hour. The maximum permissible speed is 130 kmph on Rajdhani routes and 110 kmph on other routes.

The refrigeration unit of the van is an integrated , self contained, fully charged, pre-wired, diesel powered one. The temperature controller of the unit is a solid-state microprocessor controller. Besides providing excellent fuel economy, refrigerated van has easy starting characteristics.
