TWO COMMITTEES CONSTITUTED TO MONITOR
TEHRI PROJECT
The Tehri Hydroelectric
Project Stage-I of 1000 MW is being implemented by the Tehri Hydro
Development Corporation, a joint venture of the Government of
India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The project is being
implemented after due environmental clearances from the Ministry
of Environment and forests and with an appropriate rehabilitation
and resettlement package. The Ministry of Environment and Forests,
Government of India, has constituted a Project Level Committee
comprising representatives of the concerned Ministries of the
Central Government as well as relevant subject matter specialists
to undertake periodic review of the environment and R&R issues
associated with the project.
In view of the sensitive
nature of the project and public concerns, the Government of India
has decided to constitute a high level Inter-Ministerial Review
Committee consisting of Secretaries of the Central Ministries
of Environment, Power, Social Justice and Water Resources, to
periodically review the environment and rehabilitation and resettlement
issues associated with the Tehri Hydroelectric Project and also
review the recommendations of the Project Level Monitoring Committee.
Chief Secretaries of Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal
will be Special Invitees to its meetings.
