RURAL WATER & SANITATION – A PROFILE
- Government investment
is more than Rs.40,000 crore for the rural drinking water sector
since independence.
- Ministry of
Rural Development has been mandated to provide safe drinking
water in all rural habitations by 2004.
- All the rural
habitations in Uttar Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Orissa, Bihar, Madhya
Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are fully covered with drinking water.
- Out of the total
14.23 lakh rural habitations in the country, 13.10 lakh habitations
are fully covered, 99000 habitations are partially covered and
12000 habitations are not covered with drinking water.
- 2.17 lakh habitations
are affected by water quality problem like fluoride, Arsenic,
Salinity, Excess Iron, Nitrate and other reasons.
- Under Sector
Reforms, 67 projects were sanctioned in 26 states with total
outlay of Rs.2060.45 crore.
- Sector Reforms
project introduced in 1999 on Pilot basis in rural drinking
water was expanded to entire country and named as Swajaldhara.
- Under Swajaldhara,
4986 projects have been approved for 15 States/1 Union Territory.
- Under Total
Sanitation Campaign, 288 projects have been sanctioned with
financial outlay of Rs.2869 crore.
- So far 25.15
lakhs individual house hold toilets, 32231 school toilets, 1050
women complexes, 3887 Anganwadi toilets and 479 Rural Sanitary
Marts have been constructed.
