EXPORTS REGISTER OVER 8% GROWTH DESPITE HIGH BASE

TRADE DATA FOR APRIL 2003
India’s exports during April,
2003 are valued at US $ 4342.65 million which is 8.71% higher
than the level of US $ 3994.67 million during April,2002. In rupee
terms, the exports were Rs. 20573.66 crore, which is 5.28% higher
than the value of exports during April, 2002. The growth has been
achieved despite the very high base of April 2002 which had seen
a growth of 28% in dollar terms.
India’s imports during April,
2003 are valued at US $ 5866.53 million representing an increase
of 39.44% over the level of imports valued at US $ 4207.22 million
in April,2002. In Rupee terms the imports increased by 35.04%.
Oil imports during April,
2003 are valued at US $ 1722.61 million which is 38.37% higher
than oil imports valued at US $ 1244.93 million in the corresponding
period last year. Non-oil imports during April,2003 are estimated
at US $ 4143.92 million which is 39.89% higher than the level
of such imports valued at US $ 2962.29 million in April,2002.
The trade deficit for
April, 2003 is estimated at US $ 1523.88 million which is higher
than the deficit at US $ 212.55 million during April, 2002.
