The Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee launched the "50,000 MW Hydro Electric Initiative" on 24.05.2003. This Initiative envisages preparation of Preliminary Feasibility Reports (PERs) for 162 Hydro-electric Schemes, having an aggregate installed capacity of 50,650 MW located in 16 States. The above Initiative includes 12 schemes of 3,750 MW in Himachal Pradesh.

Ten Hydro-electric Projects of 4,054 MW installed capacity are at present under development and 12 Hydro-electric Schemes with installed capacity of 2,513 MW are under different stages of Survey and Investigation in Himachal Pradesh.
