WATER SUPPLY PROJECTS IN ORISSA

Ministry pf Urban
Development and Poverty Alleviation has so far sanctioned water
supply projects for 23 towns under Accelerated Urban Water Supply
Programme (AUWSP) in Orissa. Water supply projects for three towns,
namely, kabisuryanagar, Belaguntha and Purushotampur have also
been submitted by the Government of Orissa for assistance under
AUWSP.
This
information was given by Minister of State for Urban Development
& Poverty Alleviation, Shri Pon. Radhakrishnan in a written
reply to the question of Shri B.J. Panda and Shri Pramila Bohidar
in Rajya Sabha today. The Minister stated that the Government
of Orissa has informed that Sambalpur town has been experiencing
water scarcity to some degree, especially in summer months because
of inadequate source. The Greater Sambalpur Water Supply Project
has been executed and commissioned by State Government on 26.4.2003.
The project has been executed by State Government of Orissa through
HUDCO loan with a matching grant provided by the State Government.
Ministry of Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation provides
Central assistance under Accelerated Urban Water Supply Programme
for towns/urban local bodies with a population of less than 20,000
as per 1991 census. Sambalpur town does not qualify for Central
assistance under AUWSP on account of population norms.
