PRODUCTION OF ENERGY FROM GARBAGE

Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources has been implementing a National Programme for Energy Recovery from Urban and Industrial Wastes since June 1995. The programme provides for financial and fiscal incentives for setting up of projects for energy recovery from wastes including the city garbage.

The potential of energy recovery from urban wastes of class I cities and wastes from selected industrial sectors has been estimated to be about 2700 MW.

Twenty one projects with a total capacity of 25.75 MW equivalent have so far been set up for energy recovery from urban and industrial wastes. Besides, 11 projects with a total capacity of 25.50 MW power are under installation.

This information was given by Shri M. Kannappan, Minister of State for Non-conventional Energy Sources, in a written reply to a question by Shri Shriniwas Patil in Lok Sabha today.
