FUNDS FOR MANNING UNMANNED RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSINGS

The Ministry of Railways has received proposals for manning of 50 unmanned railway level crossings under Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) from 39 Members of Parliament.

Funds from MPLADS have so far been released for manning of 20 level crossings only. Out of these, work of manning of 12 unmanned level crossings has been completed and on eight unmanned level crossings, work was in progress.

During the current financial year 2003-2004, Rs. 50 crore has been allocated for manning of unmanned level crossings as against Rs. 46 crore provided during 2002-2003. During 2002-2003, 85 unmanned level crossings were converted into manned ones.

The Railways have 38000 unmanned level crossings. Their conversion into manned level crossings is intended to increase safety standards of rail services.
