RAILWAY GOODS CLAIMS COMPENSATION


The claim prevention measures on Indian Railways have resulted in drop of 23 per cent in registration and 28 per cent in receipt of claim cases in 2002-2003 as compared to 2001-2002. Besides, the pending cases dropped by 18.6 per cent in 2002-2003 as compared to previous year.

The percentage of claims amount paid to earnings on all Indian Railways on claim compensation on account of goods, luggage and parcel during 2002-2003 was 0.08 as compared to 0.09 during previous year.

The gross amount paid on all Indian Railways for all commodities excluding accident compensation in 2002-2003 was Rs. 22.12 crores which was 6.3 per cent less than the payment made in previous year.

However, there was increase of 17.9 per cent in the payment made under court decrees during 2002-2003 as compared to previous year.

Institution of fresh suits on claims also came down by 21.2 per cent in 2002-2003. However, efforts are made to avoid litigation by assessing the claim cases in the right perspective and expeditiously in terms of the provisions of the Railways Act, 1989.
