SHRI GOEL EXHORTS SPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA TO EXPAND ITS AREAS OF FUNCTIONING

Shri Vijay Goel, Minister of State, Youth Affairs and Sports, today visited Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and held discussions with the senior officials there.

Shri Goel suggested that a road map to open new centres of Sports Authority of India (SAI) should be drawn and prioritized. For this, the actual requirements, availability of the sports persons and willingness of the State to provide land and seed-money should be taken into account. Similarly, a list of Priority Sports for India should be re-drawn, keeping in view the achievements of the Indian Sports persons in recent years in international competitions, popularity of the game especially in the rural areas and the cost involved in popularizing a sport. He reiterated that efforts should be made to popularize and provide necessary facilities to indigenous sports also.

Shri Goel focussed on the changed dimension of sports and said that SAI should publish white papers on sports related issues like sports science, doping etc. He also stressed the need of talent search to enable young sport persons to take up sports as a profession. He advocated the participation of private sector in talent hunt to make available best sport persons for the country at a relatively younger age.

Shri Goel desired that the maintenance of stadia, both inside and outside should be done in a better manner. He complimented SAI for the services rendered by them in preparing many outstanding sports persons, for providing international level of coaching, in talent hunt and also for promoting the culture of sports in the country. He felt that its contributions and facilities should be made known more publicly.

Shri Goel directed officials to streamline the training facilities for the young players and make available all modern training equipment, especially, in the interiors of the country. He exhorted the SAI officials for ‘preventive maintenance’ of the buildings and better utilisation of the covered and uncovered spaces for furtherance of sporting activities.
