PRELIMINARY REPORT ON ACCIDENT INVOLVING SECUNDERABAD-MANMAD EXPRESS AT GHATNANDUR STATION


Shri A.P. Agrawal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, South Central Circle, Secunderabad, has held a statutory inquiry on 5th and 6th January, 2003 at Parlivaijnath into the Rear end collision between Train No. 7064 Up Secunderabad-Manmad express and a goods train at Ghatnandur Railway Station on Vikarabad – Parlivaijnath section of Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway at 01.23 hours on 3rd January, 2003. The accident resulted in death of 20 passengers, grievous injuries to 12 passengers and simple injuries to 57 passengers. The site is situated in Beed district in the state of Maharashtra.

According to the provisional findings of the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the accident occurred due to Human failure, reception signals for main line, which was already occupied by the goods train, most probably were taken off for Train No. 7064 Up resulting into rear end collision of the train with the brakevan of the goods train.

The accident falls under the category of "Failure of Railway Staff".
