The total production
of finished steel in the country, during April to December 2002,
has been provisionally estimated at 23.8 million tonnes against
22.4 million tonnes during the same period last year, showing
an increase of 6.3 per cent. The total production of pig iron
during this period has been 3.9 million tonnes against 2.9 million
tonnes during the same period of last fiscal showing an increase
of 34 per cent. The export of 27.5 lakh tonnes of steel during
these nine months has also shown a growth of 21.6 per cent. During
this period the apparent consumption of finished steel has gone
up by 5 per cent and the consumption of pig iron by 28.3 per cent
compared to the same period last year.
