CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR DECEMBER, 2002; BASE 1984-85=100


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of December, 2002 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for December 2002 is 405, which is 3 points less than the index for the month of November, 2002. At the major group level, the index in December, 2002 when compared to last month that is November, 2002 has decreased by 1.74%. in the case of "Food, Beverages & Tobacco". However, the indices for "Clothing, Bedding and Footwear" & "Fuel & Light" groups have increased by 0.52% & 0.44% respectively. At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has decreased by 18.18%. With the corresponding All India index for December, 2001 being 394, the index for the month of December, 2002 has shown a rise of 2.8 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April 2002 to December, 2002 works out to 404, which is higher by 3.9% over the average index of 389 for the corresponding period of the previous year.

. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for December, 2002; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for December, 2002 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for December, 2001 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for December, 2002 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely December, 2001. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from – 0.5 to 6.7 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Mangalore and the decrease in the case of Patna and Imphal. The increases are less than 0 for 2 centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 12 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 30 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 14 centres and 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 1 centre. As many as 28 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 2.8 percent while 30 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average whereas 1 centre has the same percentage increaseas that of All-India figure.
