STATES URGED TO STRENGTHEN ‘SURVPRIYA’ SCHEME

Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has urged State Chief Ministers and Lt. Governors of Union Territories to strengthen survpriya scheme for the benefit of the common man. Under ‘survpriya’ scheme launched through National Consumers’ Co-operative Federation of India (NCCF) eleven essential commodities are distributed through ration shops on a no profit no loss basis. In a letter addressed to them Shri Yadav suggested that more items of common needs would be added to the list provided the State Governments/State Agencies agree to place adequate volume of orders for such identified items. These items could be sold to consumers through existing PDS retail outlets and the outlets of State Consumers’ Co-operative Federation or State Civil Supplies Corporation etc. The NCCF has also agreed to supply the goods in convenient consumer packs at places identified by the State Governments/State Agencies in agreed quantities; the letter adds.

Shri Yadav expressed the hope that efforts made in this regard would have a salubrious effect in containing retail prices of these essential commodities in the market besides improving the viability of the existing fair price shops under the Public Distribution System.
