QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER, 2002


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of November 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 173.2 which is higher by 3.7% as compared to the month of November 2001.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of November 2002 stand at 139.9, 178.8, and 163.5 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 2.9%, 3.8% and 3.5% as compared to November 2001. The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-November, 2002 over the corresponding period of 2001 has been 5.7%, 5.4% and 4.0%, respectively. The overall growth in the General Index during this period has been 5.3%.

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for November 2002, the indices for October 2002 have undergone the first revision and those for August 2002 the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for August 2002 and October 2002.

As many as 13 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of November 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown the highest growth of 35.6%, followed by 22.7% in Transport Equipment and Parts and 8.3% in Paper & Paper Products and Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries. On the other hand, Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown a negative growth of 24.3% followed by a decline of 7.9% in Leather and Leather & Fur Products and 7.1% in Food Products.

As per Use-based classification, the growth in November 2002 over November 2001 is 2.9% in Basic goods, 9.6% in Capital goods and 5.0% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-)1.9% and 3.0% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 1.8%.

Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of November 2002, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
