PERFORMANCE OF NON-FERROUS METAL SECTOR IMPROVES


Performance of Non-ferrous metal sector has shown overall improvement during the quarter April-November, 2002 with cumulative production of Aluminium being 417747 tonnes against 411033 tonnes during the same quarter in 2001. Production of Copper during April-November 2002 stood at 2,47,968 tonnes against 2,10,916 tonnes during the same quarter last year. Production of Zinc increased by 14380 tonnes and lead by 628 tonnes. Details of the production are given below:-

Performance of Non-ferrous Metals Sector:

  1. Aluminium:

(i) Production of Aluminium metal in the Public Sector Unit, namely, National Aluminium Company Ltd. (NALCO) and Private Sector units, namely, Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) {which has 49% Central Govt. equity}, Indian Aluminium Company Limited (INDAL), Hindustan Aluminium Company Ltd.(HINDALCO) and Madras Aluminium Company Ltd.(MALCO) in the country during the month of November, 2002 was as follows:-

  1. Copper:

The production of Copper in the organised Sector by the Public Sector Unit, Hindustan Copper Ltd.(HCL), and Private Sector Units, Indo Gulf Corporation Ltd. (IGCL), (Unit: Birla Copper) and Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd. (SIL) in the country during the month of November,2002 was as follows:

Gold:

Bharat Gold Mines Ltd.(BGML) and Hutti Gold Mines Ltd.(HGML) are the two units processing gold from ore stage. Hindustan Copper Ltd.(HCL) is the only one unit processing gold as a by-product while processing copper. The production of gold by these units during November, 2002 was as follows:

* Shortfall is because of:-

  1. The MOU target of 18000 m. for drilling is inclusive of 8000 m of blast hole drilling for mine services, which could not be taken up due to non-availability of work.
  2. The performance has also been affected due to non-commencement of promotional projects of DOM.

5. Production of Minerals:- The total value of mineral production covering metalliferrous and industrial minerals but excluding fuel minerals, minor minerals and atomic minerals in November, 2002 is estimated to be Rs 526 crores against Rs 529 crores for November, 2001

Expansion of NALCO’s Aluminium Smelter and Captive Power Plant.

The 7th unit of CPP has been synchronized on 6.12.2002, and the mechanical completion of the total plant consisting of 240 posts will be completed by December, 2002 and the actual operationalisation of all the 240 posts is expected by 31.1.2004. However, the commissioning of 120 posts is expected to be completed by 31st January, 2003. Inspite of expected slippage in completion of the project, no cost overrun is being expected.

The 8th unit of CPP in expected to be commissioned 14.2.2004.
