High Security Registration
Plates are being introduced for new vehicles from January 1,
2004. Vehicles registered prior to January 1, 2004 will get
two years time to get these plates installed. There are about
five crore motor vehicles in the country. Selection of vendor/vendors
for High Security Registration Plates is to be made by a competitive
process. This is required to be done by the respective States/Union
Territories. The price of the High Security Registration Plates
in a State would be known only thereafter.
All prospective
vendors have to get their product type approved by one of the
testing agencies notified by the Government, none of which is
under the administrative control of this Ministry. Thereafter,
it is up to the concerned State Government to select a vendor/vendors
from amongst those who have obtained the type approval. Following
