NO PROPOSAL TO REVISE RESERVATION POLICY

LOK SABHA

Government has no proposal to revise reservation policy. Starting this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Sanjay Paswan said that reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, provided initially for a period of 10 years, has been extended from time to time. He said that the Constitution 79th Amendment Act, 1999 was enacted to continue reservation for another ten years from January 25, 2000. Dr. Paswan said that reservation in services was not introduced for any specified period.

In reply to another question, Dr. Pawsan said that Central Ministries and Departments are following instructions issued by the Government of India regarding reservation in services in Group A/ Gazetted posts. He said reserved category candidates are generally available for filling up reserved vacancies. However, in the event of suitable SC/ST candidates not available, the posts are kept vacant for filling up in subsequent recruitment years. Same procedure is followed in case of non-availability of suitable candidates for promotions to reserved posts. Dr. Paswan said the reservation in state services is the concern of the respective state governments.
