INDIAN DEMOCARTIC SYSTEM MORE ACCEPTABLE

The Minister of Information and Broadcasting Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that it is the collective responsibility of us all, more so of the politicians to make our democratic system more responsible, acceptable and workable. He said that the over 50 years of our democratic functioning has established that India will only be governed by a democratic system. There shall be no military rule or the repetition of any 1975 Emergency type aberration.

Opening a panel discussion on " The Politics of Coalition: Progressive or Regressive", organised by the FICCI Ladies Organisation, here today, Shri Prasad said that coalition have come into being because the Congress Party which ruled the country for a long time declined but without a matching development of other political parties at the national level. He said people’s wish in favour of a coalition should be fully respected.

Shri Prasad said that to make a coalition succeed, four fundamental components are essential. These are; a) it must have a recognised leader, b) there must be a dominant party around which other smaller parties flourish, c) a Common Minimum Programme and d) basic mutual trust and reciprocity among the constituents. He said the present coalition at the centre has succeeded due to the above components and so has it worked in West Bengal. Good governance must occupy the central space in the functioning of our polity, Shri Prasad said.

Those who participated in the discussion included Members of Parliament, S/Shri Amar Singh (SP), Nilotpal Basu (CPM), T. Subbarami Reddy (Cong) and Praful Patel (NCW).
