NATIONAL HIGHWAYS DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

During the financial year 2002-2003 (upto January 2003), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has raised Rs.5275 crore from market (through issue of capital gains tax exemption bonds under Section 54 EC of Income Tax Act) to part finance the National Highways Development Project (NHDP).

During the financial year 2002-2003, an amount of Rs.2000 crore has been allocated to NHAI from cess funds to part finance NHDP.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed to levy an additional cess of 30 paise per litre on petrol and diesel for funding of second phase of NHDP.

This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Road Transport and Highways, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) B.C. Khanduri in a written reply to a question of Shri T.M. Selvaganapathi in Lok Sabha today.
