The prize distribution
function of the 5th National Youth Parliament Competition,
2001-2002 for universities/colleges was held today at Mavalankar
Auditorium. Shri O. Rajgopal, Hon’ble Minister of State for
Parliamentary Affairs and Defence presided over the function
and distributed the trophies and prizes to the various institutions
and students. The students of Lucknow University, Lucknow, Uttar
Pradesh, which stood first in the competition, presented a short
sitting of ‘Youth Parliament’.
The Ministry
of Parliamentary Affairs has been organising Youth Parliament
Competitions in various educational institutions with a view
to acquainting the student community with the practical working
of parliamentary institutions and to imbibe in them the qualities
of self-discipline, tolerance of diverse opinion, right expression
of views and other virtues of democratic living.
‘Youth Parliament’
competitions were first started in the Senior Secondary Schools
of Delhi in the year 1966. At present, four separate National
Youth Parliament Competitions are conducted by this Ministry
for Schools of Delhi Administration/NDMC, Kendriya Vidyalayas,
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and Universities/Colleges. The National
Youth Parliament Competition for Universities and Colleges were
started in 1997-98 as a new initiative in celebration of the
50 years of India’s independence.
37 universities/colleges
participated in the Fifth National Youth Parliament Competition
which was held during 2001-2002. The competition was held first
at Group level and then at the National level among the group
winners. Lucknow university, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, which secured
the first position in the competition will be awarded the prestigious
Parliamentary Running Shield at the Prize Distribution Function
to be held on 25/2/2003. In addition to the above 14 institutions
will be awarded Merit Trophies for their meritorious performance
at the Group Level Competitions.
