The Public
Sector Unit, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is constantly
exploring opportunities to achieve growth in all its areas of
operation including production. To achieve growth it has ensured
adequate quantity and quality of inputs improved equipment utilisation
and followed aggressive marketing strategy to increase sales.
The four integrated steel plants Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur and
Rourkela have produced 8.27 million tonnes of saleable steel
during April-January, 2003 against a target of 10.2 million
tonnes. Replying to a question of Shri Basudeb Acharia, MP the
Minister for Steel Shri B.K.Tripathy gave this information in
the Lok Sabha today.
In a reply to the
question of Shri Sunil Khan MP, he said that there is no proposal
to privatise SAIL at present. Its Central Marketing Organisation
(CMO) has been reorganised into long products and flat products
structure with the basic objective of giving thrust to product
based marketing and to integrate production with marketing.
The Minister informed
that the rehabilitation proposal for Indian Iron & Steel
Company (IISCO) has been submitted to the Board for Industrial
and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR). It includes a Voluntary
Retirement Scheme (VRS) in Kulti Works, Burnpur Works, mines
& collieries as well as for capital expenditure in these
units. Kulti Works is however to be closed.
