The Steel Authority
of India Limited (SAIL), a public sector undertaking of the
Steel Ministry has been successful in bringing down its debt
to Rs.13,640 crore by December 2003. The company has achieved
a cash profit of Rs. 215 crore for the third quarter of the
current fiscal year as against a cash loss of Rs. 297 crore
in the same period of the previous year.
On March 31, 1999
the total borrowing of SAIL was Rs. 21017 crore. It was brought
down to Rs. 15082 crore in 1999-2000. The trend of reduction
continued and the total borrowing as on December 31, 2002 was
Rs. 13640 crore.

was given by the Minister for Steel, Shri Braja Kishore Tripathy
in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
