The Railways earned
Rs.22117.57 crores from freight traffic during the first ten
months of the current financial year ending January 2003 as
compared to Rs.20459.98 crores during the corresponding period
of the previous year.
Of the total earnings
during the period, Rs.9539.95 crores was realized from transportation
of coal, Rs.937.39 crores from raw material to steel plants,
Rs.1068.13 crores from finished iron and steel, Rs.498.52 crores
from iron ore export, Rs.1719.16 crores from cement, Rs.2620.48
crores from foodgrains, Rs.1080.17 crores from fertilizers,
Rs. 2257.20 crores from Petroleum. Oil and Lubricant (POL) and
Rs.2396.57 crores from other goods.
The improvement
in earnings from the freight traffic over the last year follows
carriage of 7.87 million tonnes of freight in excess of the
target of 418.50 million tonnes during the period totaling actual
freight traffic of 426.37 million tonnes. The current year’s
total target of 510 million tonnes freight traffic is envisaged
to be exceeded.
