CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR JANUARY, 2003 (BASE 1984-85=100)


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of January, 2003 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for January 2003 is 406, which is 1 point less than the index for the month of December, 2002. At the major group level, the index in January, 2003 when compared to last month that is December, 2002 has increased by 3.45% in the case of "Housing"and 0.66% in case of "Fuel & Lights". However, the index for "Food and Beverages & Tobocco" group has decreased by 1.01%. At the sub-group level, the index for "Oil & Fats" has increased by 2.12% while that of "Vegetables" has decreased by 11.38%. With the corresponding All India index for January, 2002 being 393, the index for the month of January, 2003 has shown a rise of 3.3 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April, 2002 to January, 2003 works out to 404, which is higher by 3.6% over the average index of 390 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for January, 2003; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for January, 2003 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for January, 2002 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for January, 2003 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely January, 2002. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 0.3 to 8.7 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Mangalore and the least in the case of Guwahati. The increases are 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 8 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 33 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 14 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 3 centres and 8.0 percent for 1 centre. As many as 26 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 3.3 percent while 32 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average whereas 1 centre has the same percentage increase as that of All-India figure.
