National Aluminium
Company, a public sector unit of the Ministry of Mines is supporting
a drinking water project for ash pond breach affected people.
The project covers a population of 30,000 in 13 affected villages.
The scheme has been designed by Government of Orissa at an estimated
cost of Rs. 5.72 crore. It will be implemented by Government
of Orissa and the entire cost of construction will be met by
NALCO. The operation and maintenance of the scheme will be undertaken
by Government of Orissa. Nalco has advanced Rs. 1 crore for
the scheme so far.
A portion of
dyke of ash pond number 2 of Captive Power Plant of NALCO, Angul,
Orissa breached on December 31, 2000 accidentally and flooded
25 numbers of revenue villages on the bank of Nandira rivulets
affecting 968 acres of agricultural land and 300 acres of Government
land.

reply in the Lok Sabha today.
