The Railways earned
a cumulative sum of Rs.30070.74 crores during the first nine
months of the current financial year ending December 2002 as
against the target of Rs.30377.44 crores fixed for the period,
showing a shortfall of Rs.306.70 crores. During the period,
cumulative expenditure incurred by the Railways was Rs.22476.60
crores as against the target of Rs.23457.82 crores, saving Rs.981.22
crores.
The shortfall in
earnings during the period is to be made over and exceeded during
the remaining quarter of the current financial year.
In the area, of
passenger booking 3750.24 million passengers travelled by trains
during the period. Of these, 2200.60 million passengers travelled
by suburban services and 1549.64 million by non-suburban services.
In the area of
punctuality, the punctuality of trains on broad gauge was 84.4
per cent as on December 31, 2002 as compared to 83.2 per cent
during the corresponding period of the previous year. As for
the metre gauge, the punctuality of train services improved
by 97.9 per cent over the target of 95 per cent for the period
as compared to 95.8 per cent during the corresponding period
of the previous year.
