A website on "Freshwater
Year – 2003" was launched here today by the Union Minister for
Water Resources, Shri Arjun Charan Sethi. While launching the
website www.freshwaterindia.org
, Shri Sethi outlined the broad objectives like increasing awareness
among the stakeholders regarding scarcity of freshwater, conservation
and efficient use, preservation-quality and its ecosystem, augmentations
of freshwater resources and community partnership. He further
elaborated that by switching the website, the media persons,
stakeholders, users and scientists working on the subject would
get instant information on freshwater and allied subjects. Shri
Sethi emphatically told that the Prime Minister stressed the
need to join hands and make concerted efforts of the government,
society, organisation, association and individual to conserve
freshwater while he inaugurated the curtain raiser on Freshwater
Year – 2003 on 5th February, 2003.
The Ministry of
Water Resources is the nodal agency for initiating and coordinating
activities relating to the freshwater year among various central
ministries and state governments. As a Member of the United
Nations, India is giving more stress on availability of freshwater
as it is fast depleting.
