The Joint Plant
committee of the Ministry of Steel organised today a workshop
on "Database Management of Indian Iron and Steel Industry" to
take stock of the needs of industry, industry associations,
research organisations, financial institutions, planners and
the steel Ministry and to broadbase the data base according
to their needs. It was one of the series of four such workshops
planned to be held this year. The first was held in Bombay.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the industry,
industry associations, financial organisations, Planning Commission,
National Sample Survey, educational institutions like IIT, research
agencies, CRISIL-a rating organisation and senior officials
of the Steel Ministry.
As information
management is considered a vital support system to take important
decisions, the workshop concluded that the official database
should be transparent, authentic and a comprehensive source
of knowledge. The people at the helm of the affairs should know
the utility of data and its contribution to the nation building
activities.
The Joint Secretary
of the Ministry of Steel Shri J.P.Singh, the Chairman of JPC
said that it is time that the Government and industry sit together
and develop a permanent system to strengthen the Iron and Steel
Industry database which will serve the common interest.
The Joint Development
Commissioner for Iron and Steel Shri S.K.Sinha and IIT Professors
stressed on authenticity and transparency of the database. They
argued for creating awareness in the country to utilize this
database. If maintained properly this would be an asset for
the entrepreneurs, planners, policy makers and researchers,
they said.
The delegates
discussed in detail the different ways of selection of data,
collection, preservation and dissemination to make it more efficient
and effective.
