Assembly Election - 2003 : Backgrounder - XV
In the forthcoming Meghalaya Assembly
Election, more than 12 lakhs electors are eligible to exercise
their franchise.
As per information
received from State election Office, 1279740 electors of the
State will exercise their franchise on 26th February,
2003 to elect its 60 member Assembly including 55 ST constituencies
and 5 General constituencies. Of the total electors, 644913
are men and 634827 are women. The largest constituency in respect
of electors is Tura (ST) with 41142 electors and the smallest
is Mawkhar (ST) with 11663 electors.
The forthcoming
election has an increase of one lakh twenty two thousand two
hundred forty six (122246) electors over the electors for 1998
Assembly. In 1998 the total number of electors was 1157494 out
of which 582930 were men and 574564 were women with polling
percentage of 74.20 % for men and 74.80 % for women. The total
number of candidates in the 1998 election was 308 and average
contestants per constituency was five.
Counting of
votes will be on 1st March, 2003 and and most of
the results are expected on the same day. The term of the present
Meghalaya Assembly expires on 8th March, 2003.
