INCLUSION OF TARKHAN COMMUNITY IN HIMACHAL PRADESH IN SC LIST UNDER GOVERNMENT’S CONSIDERATION

Some Member of Parliament and the Himachal Pradesh Assembly have recommended inclusion of the Tarkhan community in the list of Scheduled Castes in Himachal Pradesh. The proposal was recommended by the Government of Himachal Pradesh. As per approved modalities, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has referred the proposal to the Registrar General of India. After receipt of comments from the Registrar General of India, it will be possible to take further action. In view of article 341(2) of the Constitution of India, the amendment in the list of Scheduled Castes can be made only by an Act of Parliament and as such, in this regard it is not possible to assign any definite time frame.

This was stated by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha today.
