A long-term perspective plan envisaging acquisition of indigenous capability in submarines design, development and construction of submarines and their core systems and also indigenous construction of submarines to meet the requirements of the Indian Navy, has been approved by the Government. The plan is to be implemented in two phases. The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2012 and the second phase in 2030.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri George Fernandes in a written reply to Shri Suresh Chandel in Lok Sabha today.
