PROMOTION OF HORTICULTURE INDUSTRY
Modalities for implementing
the National Horticulture Mission are being worked out in consultation
with the State Governments. The announcement regarding the launching
of the Mission was made by the Prime Minister in his Independence
Day address to the nation this year. The Mission aims at giving
impetus to cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices,
etc. and the target is to double the horticulture production in
the country by 2010.
At present, the Government
is implementing programmes for development of horticulture under
the centrally sponsored scheme of "Technology Mission for
Integrated Development of Horticulture in the North Eastern States
including Sikkim". The Scheme has been extended to Jammu
& Kashmir, Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh during 2003-04.
