ASSISTANCE TO WEST BENGAL FOR FLOOD CONTROL

The Government of West Bengal informed that the State Government is aware of drainage congestion encountered in the district of Purba Medinipur (East Midnapore) particularly in the Dubda Basin area in P. S. Ramnagar and Egra, caused by Kudi-Negua Channel System, due to heavy downpour during the period from 05.10.2003 to 09.10.2003 caused by formation of a deep depression, in the Bay of Bengal. So far, the State Government has not requested the Union Government for financial assistance.

Further, the Union Government has not received any proposal from the State Government for completion of Dugda Basin Rain Scheme by re-excavating the Kudi Canal and connecting it to the sea.

This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Water Resources, Smt. Bijoya Chakravarty in written reply to a question from Dr. Nitish Sengupta in the Lok Sabha today.
