REFINING CAPACITY OF CRUDE OIL
LOK SABHA
Shri Ram Naik, Minister
of Petroleum & Natural Gas, informed the Lok Sabha while replying
to a question that as against the overall consumption of 104.126
million metric tonne (MMT) of petroleum products in the country
during 2002-03, the total installed refining capacity, as on 31st
March 2003, was 116.97 MMT per annum (MMTPA).
The country presently
imports LPG to meet part of the domestic requirement. A quantity
of 1.073 MMT of LPG was imported during 2002-03 as the domestic
production of LPG was less than the total LPG requirement of 8.351
MMT during the year. The setting up/expansion of refineries has
been delicensed since June 1998. The ongoing expansion of some
of the existing refineries is expected to increase LPG production
in the country. The Minister further told the House about the
three new grass-root refinery projects under implementation which
would increase the refining capacity by 24 MMTPA.
