CENTRE APPROVES PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION TO PROVIDE RESERVATION IN GOVERNMENT JOBS TO ECONOMICALLY BACKWARD CLASSES

LOK SABHA

The Central Government has approved, in principle, the proposal to amend the Constitution in order to provide reservation quota in government jobs for people belonging to economically backward classes (EBCs). Stating this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri Nagmani said that the government has also approved the proposal for setting up a Commission to study the issue. It would work out the modalities to provide reservation for EBCs not covered by the existing reservation policy. Shri Nagmani said the proposed Commission would elicit the views of the state governments and administrations of union territories and others on modalities of reservation and also suggest criteria for identification of economically backward classes. He said a Chairperson would head the Commission, which will consist of four other Members with suitable expertise. Shri Nagmani said that the Commission would submit its Report within one year from the date of its appointment.
