EXPORT GROWTH SUSTAINED

INDIA’S FOREIGN TRADE DATA: APRIL-OCTOBER 2003-04


India’s Exports during April-October, 2003-2004 are valued at US $ 32092.42 million which is 8.44% higher than the level of US $ 29595.19 million during April-October, 2002-2003. This is over and above 19.13% export growth in April-October, 2002-03 over the corresponding previous period. In rupee terms, the exports were Rs. 148691.84 crore, during April- October, 2003-2004 which is 3.15% higher than the value of exports during April- October, 2002-2003.

Exports during October, 2003 are valued at US $ 4884.66 million which is 5.07% higher than the level of US $ 4649.16 million during October, 2002. This is over and above the 25.05% export growth in October, 2002 over October, 2001. In rupee terms, the exports in October, 2003 were Rs. 22170.16 crore, which is 1.42% lower than the value of exports during October, 2002.

India’s Imports during April-October, 2003-2004 are valued at US $ 41361.66 million representing an increase of 21.46% over the level of imports valued at US $ 34052.68 million in April- October, 2002-2003. In Rupee terms, the imports have increased from Rs. 165854.55 crore to Rs. 191660.54 crore showing a growth of 15.56% during the period.

Oil imports during April- October, 2003-2004 are valued at US $ 10867.64 million which is 6.48% higher than oil imports valued at US $ 10206.48 million in the corresponding period last year. Non-oil imports during April- October, 2003-2004 are estimated at US $ 30494.02 million which is 27.88% higher than the level of such imports valued at US $ 23846.20 million in April- October, 2002-2003.

Imports during October, 2003 are valued at US $ 6905.70 million representing an increase of 23.47 % over the level of imports valued at US $ 5593.07 million in October, 2002. In Rupee terms the imports increased by 15.85% during October, 2003.

The trade deficit for April- October, 2003-2004 is estimated at US $ 9269.24 million which is higher than the deficit at US $ 4457.49 million during April- October, 2002-2003.

Tables giving details of exports, imports and trade balance, according to the provisional estimates of Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics (DGCI&S) are attached.
