PM TO LAY FOUNDATION STONE OF OMKARESHWAR
PROJECT
The Prime Minister,
Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayeee will lay the Foundation Stone of the
520 MW Omkareshwar Project in Madhya Pradesh on August 30, 2003.
The Omkareshwar Project is a multipurpose project on the river
Narmada. The project will have an installed capacity of 520 MW
(8X65) and will also support the irrigation of 2.83 lacs hectares
annually. The project, located 77 kms from Indore in Khandwa District
of Madhya Pradesh, is scheduled for commissioning in February
2008.
The cost estimates
of the Project have been approved by CCEA and the sanction was
issued on 29th May, 2003. The project is estimated
to cost Rs 2224.73 crore at November 2002 price level (including
IDC of Rs. 233.12 crore) for execution of Unit-I (Dam and Appurtenant
Works) and Unit-II (Power House). The project will be executed
by the Narmada Hydro Development Corporation, a Joint Venture
of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited and Government
of Madhya Pradesh. The power component of the project will be
Rs.2041.93 crore and the irrigation component will be Rs.182.80
crore. The Government of Madhya Pradesh will contribute the irrigation
component as a grant to the NHDC.
The entire power
generated from the Omkareshwar Project will be consumed by the
home state, Madhya Pradesh, at a tariff to be determined by the
CERC. The Power Purchase Agreement, which now exists for the Indira
Sagar Project, will be extended to Omkareshwar project as well.
