FOCUS ON FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT

The Centre has initiated an Action Plan for developing the fishery sector in Lakshadweep and Andaman-Nicobar Islands. Both Union Territories have an enormous potential in pisciculture.

To conserve the country’s fishery resources, the Centre and the concerned States have banned fishing on the East and West Coast. The step is intended to reduce the pressure on fishing and stimulate rejuvenation of the fish stock.

An Integrated Fisheries Project has also been set up at Kochi by the Centre to train individuals in fish processing. The training module has been worked out for both inland and marine pisciculture for fishers- both men and women. (PIB Special Services)
