RAJNATH SINGH REVIEWS MILK SHORTAGE IN DELHI

DMS TO AUGMENT SUPPLY FROM GUJARAT COOPs TO MEET DEMAND

Union Agriculture Minister Shri Rajnath Singh today held a high level meeting to review the milk shortage in the capital city and directed the officials to take immediate measures so to tackle the milk shortage and to restore normalcy. The Delhi Milk Scheme (DMS), under the Ministry of Agriculture has started receiving 50,000 litres of additional milk per day from Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) since yesterday. Shri Rajnath Singh asked DMS to procure 200,000 litres of milk to meet the demand.

DMS has already stopped production of full cream milk with effect from 24th of this month to augment the supply of toned and double toned milk, a practice which Mother Dairy is also following. Shri Rajnath Singh suggested the suppliers not to convert liquid milk into milk products till situation is improved. He hoped that it is a temporary phase and since rains are good this year, the milk production will increase in due course of time. The Minister also asked the State Government to keep a strict check on the figures furnished by private milk suppliers on their daily milk production and sale.

Delayed and poor calving of milch animals by two months, check on production and sale of synthetic milk in and around Delhi and decline in procurement of milk at all India level particularly the northern States are main cause of shortage of milk in Delhi.
