GROWTH OF CORPORATE SECTOR DURING MAY, 2003


During the month of MAY, 2003, 2374 companies were registered in India under the Companies Act, 1956 as against 2099 companies registered during the corresponding month of the previous year and 2222 companies during the previous month. Of the 2374 companies registered during the month, 2366 companies were limited by shares. This includes four government public ltd. Companies viz. Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Ltd., Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Ltd. , Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Ltd. and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Ltd. The month-wise registration of new companies during 2002-03 and 2003-04 is charted below:

Besides 2366 companies limited by shares, eight companies were registered as guarantee companies during the month of May, 2003. The total authorised capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs. 2537.3 crores. 2366 companies, limited by shares, registered during the month consist of 100 public limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 2228.2 crores and 2266 private limited companies with an authorised capital of Rs. 309.1 crores.

The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month were reported from the Union Territory of Delhi (520) followed by the State of. Maharashtra (502). The States of Tamilnadu (190), West Bengal (166), Andhra Pradesh (153), Karnataka (146) & Gujarat (129) also reported comparatively larger number of companies registered during the month. These 7 States together accounted for nearly

 

75 % per cent of the total number of companies registered during the month.

 

The analysis of new registration by broad Industrial Classification during the month brings out that the highest number of companies were registered under the Industrial Classification " Manufacturing"( 821) followed by "Financing, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services" (644) and "Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants & Hotels" (464). The other Classification along with number of companies registered are Construction (157), Community Social and Personal Services (114),Transport, Storage and Communication (109), Agriculture &Allied Activities (47) and Mining & Quarrying (10).

Of the Non- Government companies, one hundred and eighty one each with authorised capital of Rs.50 lakhs or above, were registered during the month of May, 2003 as against 136 in the previous month and 129 in May , 2002.

Seventy two companies have reportedly ceased functioning during May, 2003 either by going into liquidation or their names having been struck off under section 560 of the Companies Act. The number of such companies in the previous month was 97. Out of 72 such companies 11 were Public Limited companies and 61 were Private Limited. Of these companies 24 belonged to Punjab , 19 to Madhya Pradesh, 7 to Tamil Nadu, 6 to Orissa, 5 to West Bengal, 4 each to Karnataka and Delhi , 2 to U.P. and 1 to Haryana. Broad Industrial Classification wise, out of 72 companies, 31 belonged to Manufacturing, 24 to Finance ,Insurance Real estate & Business services, 8 to Wholesale and Retail trade, Restaurants & Hotels, 3each to Agriculture & Allied Activities and Construction, 2 to Transport, storage and Communication and 1 to Community Social and Personal Services . Taking into consideration information relating to registration, liquidation / striking off etc. of companies, the number of companies at work on 31.05.2003 is indicated below.
