SATELLITE
BASED AIR NAVIGATION OF INDIAN AIRSPACE
Satellite Based
Air Traffic Management Services for the Indian Airspace in
the offing. The Indian Space Research Organisation in coordination
with the Airports Authority of India is working on a Technology
Demonstration Project for this Satellite Based Augmentation System.
The Project is the first step towards introduction of a consolidated
satellite based on communications, Navigation, Surveillance Air
Traffic Management system for the Indian Airspace.
The Technology Demonstration
System will have the necessary infrastructure in space and on
ground to prove the efficacy of the project. Initially for this,
a network of ground reference stations, a master control station,
ground up link station and satellite navigation payload in space,
etc. are being planned. A time-frame of four years has been set
for its demonstration.
The Demonstration
project is part of a national plan for satellite navigation over
Indian Airspace. Then it will enter the initial Experimental phase
and finally, the operational phase. The Indian space based Augmentation
System is also expected to bridge the gap in the European Geo-stationary
Navigation overlay system and the Japanese Space Augmentation
System, to provide seamless navigation of aircraft from West to
East and vice-versa. When operational it will play an important
role in the introduction of air-navigation services in the whole
Asia-Pacific region.
