RESERVATION FOR OBCs
NOT IN FORCE IN 8 STATES /UTS
RAJYA
SABHA
The reservation
for OBCs` is not in force in eight States and Union Territories.
While Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Andaman
& Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep have no OBC population,
the State Government has not yet fixed the percentage of reservation
for OBCs in Manipur. In Tripura, the state government has provided
47% reservation out of which 16% is for Scheduled Castes and 31%
for Scheduled Tribes in civil services. In view of the Supreme
Court judgement in the Indira Sawhney and Others v/s. Union of
India & Others, the total reservation cannot exceed 50%. However,
Centre has no proposal to amend the constitution to provide reservation
for people belonging to OBCs` in Tripura.
This was
stated by the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment
Shri Nagmani in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
