TO MONITOR WORKING OF NGOs

The Ministry
of Social Justice and Empowerment is considering to utilize the
proposed Social Justice Centres for monitoring the working of
the NGOs. This was stated by the Minister of Social Justice and
Empowerment Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya while replying to supplementaries
during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha today. Dr. Jatiya said
that the Ministry has set up a committee under a former Secretary
to look into the question of whether the money allocated to NGOs
is actually reaching the beneficiaries. He said that the state
governments monitor the working of NGOs. He urged them to send
their reports in this regard in time Dr. Jatiya said that, whenever
possible, specific complaints against NGOs are got inquired by
the officials of the Ministry. He said that monitoring of NGOs
by Social Justice Centres would be in addition to their routine
duties.

Justice Centres announced by the Prime Minister on Independence
Day would be primarily set up for the welfare and empowerment
of disabled and weaker sections of society. These centres to be
set up at district level would be involved in rehabilitation and
training of target groups of the various schemes run by the Ministry
of Social Justice and Empowerment. The Social Justice centre would
also help in creating awareness about various schemes aimed at
empowerment and economic upliftment of the marginalised sections
of the society.
