EU-US FARM TRADE PLANS NOT ACCEPTABLE, SAYS JAITLEY

Shri Arun Jaitley, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Law & Justice, has said that the latest farm trade proposals presented by the European Union (EU) and United States (US) are not acceptable to India. Speaking to some television crews on the sidelines of a consultative meeting on WTO issues with BJP representatives held here today, he said: "Protecting the interests of farmers is our priority. We cannot give the farmers the kind of (trade distorting) subsidies that the developed countries are giving and, therefore, they must reduce and thereafter, eliminate these subsidies. Secondly, we have to give reasonable tariff protection to our farmers. We also need additional tariff protection for sensitive items and special safeguards to stop surge in imports", India will be presenting its detailed reaction to the latest EU-US farm proposal to the WTO in Geneva later today, Shri Jaitley added.
