QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED
INDEX FOR JUNE 2003 (BASE 1993-94=100)
The Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for
the month of June 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical
Organisation. The General Index stands at 175.6 which is higher
by 5.7% as compared to the month of June 2002.
The Indices of Industrial
Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors
for the month of June 2003 stand at 138.7, 182.0, and 164.0 respectively,
with the corresponding growths of 5.9%, 5.8% and 4.7% as compared
to June 2002. The cumulative growths during April-June 2003-04
over the corresponding period of 2002-03 in the three sectors
have been 5.3%, 5.5% and 3.9% respectively, with the overall growth
in the General Index being 5.3%.
Along with the Quick
Estimates of IIP for June 2003, the indices for May 2003 have
undergone the first revision and those for March 2003, the second
(final) revision in the light of the updated data received from
the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions
in the indices of manufacturing and electricity sectors, the indices
of mining sector for March 2003 and May 2003 have undergone upward
revisions of 1.0% and 1.5% respectively. The upward revisions
in the indices of Mining Sector for March 2003 and May 2003 are
due to subsequent increase in reported production of Coal, Chromite,
Lignite, Bauxite, Gold, Iron Ore, Manganese Ore, Dolomite, Barytes
and Limestone as compared to their estimated/provisional production
figures. However, the revisions in the mining sector’s indices
have only marginal impact on the general index.
As many as 11
of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth
during the month of June 2003 as compared to the corresponding
month of the previous year. Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre Textiles
have shown the highest growth of 26.0%, followed by 25.2% in Transport
Equipment and Parts and 17.3% in Rubber, Plastic, Petroleum and
Coal Products. On the other hand, Leather and Leather & Fur
Products have shown a negative growth of 13.3% followed by a decline
of 8.4% in Cotton Textiles and 5.7% in Metal Products and Parts,
except Machinery and Equipment.
As per Use-based
classification, the growth in June 2003 over June 2002 is 6.1%
in Basic goods, 5.3% in Capital goods and 4.7% in Intermediate
goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded
growth of (-) 0.6% and 8.7% respectively, with the overall growth
in Consumer goods being 6.3%.

Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral,
2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987
and by Use-based classification for the month of June 2003, along
with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous
year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
